Where disability is no hindrance
2009-06-16 by Martin Nersing
From Sunday afternoon, disabled spectators will have the chance to experience the Volvo Ocean Race from the water. Disability-friendly boats will be waiting at Skeppsbron to take you on a tour free of charge.
There are some 15-20 daily departures from Skeppsbron for the tour of Race Village. The tour boats are wheel-chair accessible and there is room for about 8 people onboard each boat.
“Seafaring should not have to be problem for the disabled, it's a basic human right,” says Jonas Nilsson, co-owner of the Hanterbara båtar company.
A few years ago Jonas Nilsson was seriously injured in a motorbike accident which left him wheelchair bound. But this disability has not stopped him from sailing. Today he runs his own company, Hanterbara båtar, which sells boats designed for the disabled. During the Volvo Ocean Race he will be providing tours at Skeppsbron free of charge.
“Those who wish may also try their hand at driving the boat. This boat is specially designed for the disabled seafarer,” he says
