About the Stockholm Stopover
In June 2009 Stockholm will be a stopover port for the international sailing competition the Volvo Ocean Race. The stopover will be the largest event in Sweden during 2009, with up to 1 million visitors expected to visit the Race Village at Skeppsbron in Stockholm.
In October 2008 the Volvo Ocean Race started in Alicante, Spain. The competition covers 37,000 nautical miles covering the worlds largest oceans and all continents to arrive in June 2009 to Stockholm. It is the last stopover before the finish of the race in St Petersburg. The City of Stockholm will host the Stockholm Stopover and Ports of Stockholm has the operating responsibilities for the event between 14-25 June 2009. Stockholm is also the home port for Ericsson Racing Team that has two boats competing in the Volvo Ocean Race, Ericsson 3 and Ericsson 4.
It is the first time that the Volvo Ocean Race has come to Stockholm. Between 1974 and 1998 the race was previously named the Whitbread Round the World Race. In 2001 Volvo took over the event and has since conducted two Volvo Ocean Race competitions, the last ending in Gothenburg 2006.
Stockholm has had extensive experience conducting large events, and it is an important part of the marketing plan for the City. The theme "Meet a new global city" is relevant not only when describing Stockholm as a destination in the Volvo Ocean Race, but also when we talk about the future of Stockholm.
